    Efficiency diagnostic and advantages of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in the early diagnosis of sepsis

    The goal of our study is to assess the diagnostic profi tability of procalcitonin (PCT) in septic shock and another biomarker as C-reactive protein (CRP). Results: Fifty-four septic patients were assessed, 66% were males; mean age, 63 years. Eighty-eight percent was diagnosed as septic shock and 11% severe sepsis. Seventy-six percent were medical patients. Positive blood cultures in 42.5%. Sepsis origin: respiratory 46%, neurological 5%, digestive 37% and urinary 3%. Average SOFA score was 10.4. Conclusions: PCT and CRP have the same efficiency in early sepsis diagnosis. The PCT and CRP effi ciency diagnostic together is signifi cant but small. We suggest using both with the doubt of sepsis.Ye

    Background: The glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is used to help monitor the degree of a diabetic’s hyperglycemia. Security and accuracy of the methods used in its detection are affected by variants forms of Hb or elevations in levels of Fetal Hb (HbF). These interference are the result of a change in the haemoglobin total net charge of the variant due of a substitution of one amino acid in the remaining amino terminal of the beta chain. International Standardization for HbA1c values (NGSP) not include interference assessment as part of the certification program. Therefore, the effect of each variant or the lifting of the HbF on HbA1c result should be examined in each sample depending on the detected variant and the method used for the detection of the same. The objectives were: to describe the possible variants of Hb and their interference in HbA1c measurement by our method, after the implementation of a computer program for their detection.     Meeting abstractBackground: Measurement of biomarkers is a potential approach to early prediction of mortality in septic patients. The purpose of this study was to asses the prognostic value of proadrenomedullin (pADM) in adult patients with sepsis with a single measurement in the first 24 hours after the onset of severe sepsis or septic shock. Conclusions: The protein pADM is an important prognostic biomarker of survival when measured on admission of septic patients to the ICU.Ye

    Salivary Alpha-Amylase Mediates the Increase in Hunger Levels in Adolescents with Excess Weight after Viewing Food Images.

    Background: Salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) initiates the digestion process in the mouth and its levels might influence feelings of hunger and the propensity toward obesity. This study aims to evaluate basal differences in sAA between adolescents with excess weight (EW) and normal weight (NW), and the associations between sAA levels and feelings of hunger after viewing food images. Methods: Adolescents (13-18 years old) classified as EW (n = 30) or NW (n = 30) participated in the study. Saliva samples were collected before the administration of a food-choice task. Hunger was evaluated before and after the food-choice task. Results: EW adolescents showed lower basal sAA levels than NW adolescents and a greater increase in hunger levels after viewing food images. In addition, sAA levels had a significant inverse relationship with the increase in hunger in EW adolescents, but not in NW adolescents. Finally, significant inverse associations between sAA, BMI, and body fat percentage were found. Conclusions: Levels of hunger and changes therein, after viewing food are dependent on sAA levels in EW adolescents. This finding indicates that sAA levels may be a mediator of feelings of hunger in individuals with overweight in the context of viewing food cues, suggesting the utility of the sAA enzyme as a marker of hunger and propensity toward obesity
